MPhil in Epidemiology or Public Health

A number of MRC studentships are available to support eligible UK/EU nationals* who wish to undertake either one year Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Epidemiology or Public Health for the 2011-2012 academic year. The MPhil in Epidemiology course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and understanding of epidemiological principles and procedures and their application to health, including advanced training in critical appraisal, statistical analysis of epidemiological data and study design.The MPhil in Public Health aims to provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge, which when combined with appropriate practical experience, can serve as a foundation for a career as a public health professional in either a service or an academic setting.

The courses are open to medical and non-medical graduates, particularly those with a background in biomedical and quantitative sciences. Applicants should have at least a 2.1 Honours Bachelors Degree in a related field (or equivalent). Applications from individuals who wish to continue to a PhD in Epidemiology or Public health are particularly welcome (see below). Financial support may cover tuition and college fees and a generous allowance expected to be in the region of £14500 per year for living costs.

PhD programme in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

MRC studentships are available to support eligible UK/EU nationals* who wish to undertake a PhD programme of research developed in conjunction with a supervisor. PhD projects will be based on the research aims of the Department of Public Health and Primary care. All PhD applicants are encouraged to identify a potential supervisor before applying. Applicants who have obtained a Masters or equivalent in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or Public Health and have an excellent first degree (2:1 or higher) will be considered for the 3-year PhD programme. Students without a Masters or equivalent are encouraged to apply for a 1+3 PhD programme and will first complete a relevant taught MPhil in Epidemiology or Public Health and then follow the PhD programme.

PhD Physics Studentship in Advanced Magnetic Resonance Techniques for Food foam Research, UK

Applications are invited for the above PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge in the Magnetic Resonance Research Centre of the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology. The centre is world renowned, focussing on the application of quantitative magnetic resonance methods and their application to problems encountered in process engineering research. The studentship is fully funded by Nestle Research Centre, Lausanne, Switzerland. The project will focus on the understanding of the physical properties of foams in terms of their stability and production. Foams are ubiquitous in food and impact many factors that are important to the consumer such as taste and texture. The project is aimed at increasing fundamental and practical knowledge to increase our ability to develop new foam food products.
This project will involve the development and implementation of advanced quantitative magnetic resonance techniques, such as fast pulsed field gradient magnetic resonance spectroscopy, multi-dimensional relaxation exchange spectroscopy and micro-fluidic micro-imaging, to gain new insights into the physics behind the ‘micro-fluidic’ generation of food foams and emulsions. In addition the successful candidate will also undertake research into the subsequent stability and ageing process of the foam/emulsion in terms of size and drainage and explore the possibilities of incorporating the new techniques, developed within the research project, into “low-field” online magnetic resonance measurements on the factory production floor. The project will involve regular travel to the research centre in Lausanne and continuous consultation with Nestle’s industrial process engineers and scientists.
The successful candidate should have a strong physics/mathematical background (preferably holding, or expecting to gain, a first class or upper 2:1 (honours) masters degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or physics) and should be able to demonstrate a high level of practical and communication skills.

Scholarship : Mentor-Based Minority Postdoctoral Fellowship, USA

Fellowship Description: The purpose of the Mentor-Based Minority Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is to support the training of minority scientistswho are underrepresented in the field of diabetes research.

Eligible minorities include: African American; Spanish,Hispanic or Latino; American Indian or Alaskan Native; and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. The fellow must be a US citizen or permanent resident. The award will be given to an established and active investigator in diabetes researchfor the annual stipend support of a postdoctoral fellow to work closely with the mentor. The applicant investigator willbe responsible for the application and selection of the qualified fellow. The term of the award is two to three years.

Hellenic Aid Scholarships Grant 2010-2011 for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies, Ministary of Foreign Affairs phd physics

Within the framework of international development cooperation and assistance, each year, Hellenic Aid grants approximately 100 scholarships to foreign and expatriate students deriving from developing countries for graduate and postgraduate studies at Greek universities and technological education institutes.

Hellenic Aid has adopted, since 2002, the Scholarships Grant Programme, which provides the opportunity to nationals of developing countries to study in academic and technological institutions in Greece. The objective of the programme is the creation of executives, capable to contribute, in the future, to the development of their country of origin.

The Greek education system, our cultural heritage, as well as the modern intellectual status of our country can operate as powerful tools to the development of their country.

At the same time, via the Scholarships Grant Programme, we create the conditions which will contribute to the assimilation of developmental assistance provided by other Hellenic Aid Service programmes, such as those in infrastructures and in professional training.
Within the framework of Hellenic Development Cooperation and Assistance, Hellenic Aid grants for the academic year 2010—2011, 100 scholarships for studies in Greece to nationals of countries included in the list of the Development Assistance Committee of OECD.
Scholarships are granted for undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Greek Higher Academic and Technological institutions.
Scholarships are not provided for a) undergraduate studies in Theology (scholarships in this sector are granted by the Directorate for Religious and Ecclesiastic Affairs of the MFA) and Fine Arts. (b) postgraduate studies in Medicine. Medical specialties are under the authority of the Ministry of Health.
This Call of Interest is forwarded to the Greek diplomatic and consular authorities in eligible countries.
All interested students should submit a complete candidature file (scholarship application accompanied by the necessary supporting documents) to the above-mentioned Greek authorities in their country of origin. The latter shall forward the whole number of files to Hellenic Aid.
The deadline for submitting applications to the Greek authorities abroad is July 30, 2010.
