African Guest Researchers Phd Physics Scholarship Programme 2012


African scholars Phd Physics scholarship program is aimed at experienced researchers in Africa in research / committed on the African continent. The Phd Physics goal of the scholarship is to promote cooperation between researchers from the Nordic countries and in Africa and facilitate the use of the library collections of the Institute of Contemporary Africa.
Phd Physics Customer researchers are invited to stay at the Institute for two or three months, work on their own projects. The Phd Physics scholarship includes a return air ticket (economy class), accommodation, per diem, and shared an office with computer / MS Word features.

Conditions of employment

Employment of the full-time position as Phd Physics -student at SRON Utrecht, is by NWO (The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research) and will be for a period of 4 years. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NWO for PhD-students and is €2.034,- gross per month on a full-time basis in the first year, increasing to €2.610,- in the fourth year.

Phd Physics The research area of the High Energy Astrophysics (HEA) division focuses on observational studies of topics/objects for which the understanding depends critically on the emitted X-ray and gamma-ray radiation. Among the most recent instrumental track records are the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on ESA's XMM-Newton satellite and the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) on NASA's Chandra. SRON is PI of both these grating instruments. Both satellites are still operational and continue to be signficantly overscribed by observing proposals from all over the world.

MPhil in Epidemiology or Public Health

A number of MRC studentships are available to support eligible UK/EU nationals* who wish to undertake either one year Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Epidemiology or Public Health for the 2011-2012 academic year. The MPhil in Epidemiology course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and understanding of epidemiological principles and procedures and their application to health, including advanced training in critical appraisal, statistical analysis of epidemiological data and study design.The MPhil in Public Health aims to provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge, which when combined with appropriate practical experience, can serve as a foundation for a career as a public health professional in either a service or an academic setting.

The courses are open to medical and non-medical graduates, particularly those with a background in biomedical and quantitative sciences. Applicants should have at least a 2.1 Honours Bachelors Degree in a related field (or equivalent). Applications from individuals who wish to continue to a PhD in Epidemiology or Public health are particularly welcome (see below). Financial support may cover tuition and college fees and a generous allowance expected to be in the region of £14500 per year for living costs.

MRC studentships are available to support eligible UK/EU nationals* who wish to undertake a PhD programme of research developed in conjunction with a supervisor. PhD Physics Studentship in Advanced Magnetic Resonance Techniques for Food foam Research, UK

Applications are invited for the above PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge in the Magnetic Resonance Research Centre of the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology. The centre is world renowned, focussing on the application of quantitative magnetic resonance methods and their application to problems encountered in process engineering research. The studentship is fully funded by Nestle Research Centre, Lausanne, Switzerland. The project will focus on the understanding of the physical properties of foams in terms of their stability and production. Foams are ubiquitous in food and impact many factors that are important to the consumer such as taste and texture. The project is aimed at increasing fundamental and practical knowledge to increase our ability to develop new foam food products.
This project will involve the development and implementation of advanced quantitative magnetic resonance techniques, such as fast pulsed field gradient magnetic resonance spectroscopy, multi-dimensional relaxation exchange spectroscopy and micro-fluidic micro-imaging, to gain new insights into the physics behind the ‘micro-fluidic’ generation of food foams and emulsions. In addition the successful candidate will also undertake research into the subsequent stability and ageing process of the foam/emulsion in terms of size and drainage and explore the possibilities of incorporating the new techniques, developed within the research project, into “low-field” online magnetic resonance measurements on the factory production floor. The project will involve regular travel to the research centre in Lausanne and continuous consultation with Nestle’s industrial process engineers and scientists.
The successful candidate should have a strong physics/mathematical background (preferably holding, or expecting to gain, a first class or upper 2:1 (honours) masters degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or physics) and should be able to demonstrate a high level of practical and communication skills.

New Array Systems University of Strathclyde

A fully-funded PhD studentship is available in the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering (CUE) (http://www.cue.ac.uk/), Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE), at the University of Strathclyde, to work in the area of ultrasonic transducer array systems.

The project aims to develop novel ultrasound phased array systems and advanced inspection techniques, to perform reliable imaging in industrial non-destructive evaluation (NDE) applications. The work will combine array transducer design with innovative signal processing techniques to improve NDE of "difficult" materials, e.g. concrete, welds and a variety of composites, where their heterogeneous nature limits the applicability of traditional methods of ultrasound imaging. A range of approaches will be investigated involving a combination of modelling, transducer array design, beamforming and signal processing. The project will be jointly supervised by Dr David Li and Prof Gordon Hayward.

Key Research Areas

• Signal processing is a major component of this project, which concerns adaptive signal processing, beam forming, noise suppression, target detection, imaging processing, etc.
• Modeling with finite element methods and software packages such as PZFlex and MATLAB to establish a virtual prototyping environment.
• Optimal transducer array system design that best supports the signal processing algorithms.

Application Areas

The set of techniques investigated in this project will be applied to an interesting but challenging application – defect detection in difficult materials. This application will be supported by some top UK companies, such as Rolls Royce, Shell, Airbus, Sellafield, and National Nuclear Laboratory, which will provide the student links with these companies. In addition, the techniques could be easily extended to other relevant areas including biomedical imaging (such as ultrasonography of fetus, heart, blood flow, etc), mobile communications, radar, sonar, and many others. All these will help to maximize the student‘s future career opportunities.

Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering (CUE)

As part of the UK Research Centre for Non Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE) (https://www.rcnde.ac.uk/index.aspx), CUE is an interdisciplinary research centre with international reputation on the modelling and design of transducer and array systems for sonar, non-destructive evaluation (NDE), biomedical and industrial processing applications, which was recently awarded two large strategic grants from EPSRC both of which will support this research programme. A wide range of modeling facilities, equipments, and expertise are available in CUE to support this project, which represents a globally unique position. The University of Strathclyde is one of the leading internationally renowned research universities in the UK and the EEE Department was awarded a 5-Star in the last RAE.

Requirements

This studentship will suit a dynamic researcher capable of working on a challenging multi-disciplinary project.
