PhD Physics Position on Biogenic Selenium Volatilization

Marine environments PhD Physics are considered that an important natural source of Se in the atmosphere. Even in terrestrial environments, such as Moore, selenium compounds can be converted into highly volatile methylated Se, which are emitted into the atmosphere. However, the process leading to the formation of marine and terrestrial selenium compounds in the atmosphere is still largely unknown and must understand.

PhD Physics An important activity of the first phase of the project is to develop analytical methods for trapping the quantitative studies and speciation of volatile Se and S. analytical techniques used in these studies include HPLC-HG-AFS (HPLC)-ICP-MS. Another task will be to these methods of analysis in studies of methylation with laboratory cultures of marine algae (in close cooperation with the Department of Environmental Toxicology) and application of a selenium-enriched natural bog in Switzerland. This PhD Physics project offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in various scientific disciplines to win, and offers a diverse and stimulating environment.

We are looking for a skilled and highly motivated person interested in challenging interdisciplinary research and enthousiastic about the development and application of analytical laboratory techniques. The PhD Physics successful candidate holds a master degree in environmental sciences, geosciences or chemistry and has a strong background in analytical chemistry. Fluency in English is mandatory and good knowledge of German is an additional asset. Ideally, the work begins in August 2011 but later starting dates can be discussed. The workplace for this position is Eawag in Dübendorf (www.eawag.ch). The candidate is enrolled as doctoral student at ETH Zurich; further information about the enrollment as doctoral student at ETH Zurich is available at www.phd.ethz.ch.

Questions related to the project can be directed to the project leader Dr. Lenny Winkel (lenny.winkel@eawag.ch).

Please apply electronically through this website, include a motivation letter, an updated CV with description of research experience and a list of publications (if any), and 2 letters of recommendation.
